A background to our Inn
A Brief History Of The Golden Pheasant, Burford
Burford was established more than 9 centuries ago, and flourished due to the wool trade in the Cotswolds. As Burford’s location was on a number of important trading routes it became a centre for the coaching trade . Additionally, horse racing on the downs drew the sporting aristocracy. The large inns served the needs of the gentry while the numerous alehouses slaked the thirst of the workers. At one point there were 28 inns and alehouses in Burford, today there are 10.
The building that houses the Golden Pheasant was built circa 1720 and it was originally a private house. It only became a business around 1840 and was originally called the Golden Ball, which may relate to the Italian wool merchants. The first landlord was John Hunt who was followed by his wife Ann and their son Fredrick. The appearance of the stone work at the front of the inn is due to a near catastrophe in the early 1970’s. During alterations a vital part of the front wall was disturbed and the entire façade began to move into the street. A total rebuild of the front was required and although the original stone was reused it was redressed.
The inn today is now a Grade 2 listed building, was comprehensively refurbished in July 2025 and is run by the Pugh family.
